The best passwords are long, memorable, complicated — and they change every once in a while.
To fend off potential potential break-in to your Gmail account, it is good practice to change your password every two months or so, but of course you should protect your emails with a new password immediately when you suspect somebody might be reading all the Gmail you get (and possibly even send some from your account).
No Password is Fully Secure
A good password frequently updated does not protect against keyloggers on your computer and people looking over your shoulders.For increased security, you can have Gmail require phone verification in addition to your password.
Change Your Gmail Password
To change your Gmail password:- Click the gear in the top Gmail navigation bar.
- Select Mail settings from the menu.
- Go to the Accounts and Import category.
- Follow the Change password link under Change account settings:.
- Type your current password under Current password:.
- Alternatively, answer your Google account's secret question.
- Enter the new password twice, under New password: and Confirm new password:.
- Make sure you pick a password that is both secure and easy to remember. Changing it frequently — just like you are doing now; congratulations! — helps protecting your Gmail account, too.
- Click Save.
Change Your Gmail Password (Older Gmail Version)
To alter your Gmail password in Gmail's "older" version:- Select Settings from the top Gmail navigation bar.
- Follow the Account Settings » link.
- Under Personal Info, click Change password.
- Type your current password under Current password:.
- Alternatively, answer your Google account's secret question.
- Enter the new password twice, under both New password: and Confirm new password:.
- Click Save.
